Understanding and Responding to Dementia: Practical strategies to prevent and de-escalate incidents and optimise understanding and communication.

This workshop is designed for first responders, careworkers or customer service professionals to gain a better understanding of dementia including common symptoms and how dementia affects the brain and behaviour. Participants will explore some contributing causes of behaviour change in people living with dementia and will learn some practical strategies on how to prevent or de-escalate incidents and a how to optimise communication.

Communication Strategies

  • Identifying barriers to communication

  • Exploring different communication styles

  • Developing strategies to support effective communication.

Behaviour Change and De-escalation Strategies

  • Identifying changed behaviours.

  • Communicating effectively with people living with dementia.

  • Learning strategies to prevent escalation of distress.

Self Care and Building Resilience

  • Developing strategies to strengthen resilience and manage work related stress

  • Learning techniques and skills to increase and improve creativity, productivity, relationships and self-worth.

  • Identifying personal strengths and ways to best apply them professionally and personally.

  • Learning how to generate positive emotions, increase happiness and optimise wellbeing.
